The first airline ever was started in Germany in 1909. Americans (Rufus Porter and Frederick Marriott) made first attempts to start airlines in the mid-19th century. Tony Jannus headed the first scheduled commercial airline flight in the United States on 1 January, 1914 for the St. Petersburg-routes. During the early 1920s, passenger service was sporadic. Most airlines at the time focused on carrying bags of mail. In 1925, however, the Ford Motor Company started the Stout Aircraft Company and began the construction of the all-metal Ford Trimotor.
